Frequently Asked HVAC Questions

  • What temperature should I set my air conditioner to during the summer?

Most homeowners are comfortable with their air conditioner set between 74 and 78 degrees during the summer. The best setting depends on your comfort preferences, home insulation, indoor humidity, and energy-efficiency goals. In South Louisiana’s hot, humid climate, your system also needs to run long enough to remove moisture from the air.

  • Is 72, 73, 74, or 77 degrees a good temperature for AC?

Any of these settings can be appropriate. Temperatures between 72 and 74 degrees provide cooler indoor conditions but may increase energy use. Settings between 75 and 77 degrees can reduce system demand while keeping many homes comfortable. Avoid making large thermostat adjustments because they will not cool the home faster.

  • How cold should the air coming from my AC vents be?

Air coming from the supply vents is commonly around 15 to 20 degrees cooler than the air entering the system through the return vent. The exact temperature can vary based on humidity, outdoor conditions, system design, and airflow. If the air feels warm or the home is not reaching the thermostat setting, the system may need professional service.

  • Why is ice forming on my air-conditioning unit?

Ice buildup can be caused by a dirty air filter, restricted airflow, a blocked evaporator coil, a blower problem, low refrigerant, or another mechanical issue. Turn off the cooling mode and allow the system to thaw before scheduling an inspection. Do not chip or scrape the ice because this can damage the equipment.

  • What does BTU mean in heating and air conditioning?

BTU stands for British Thermal Unit and measures how much heating or cooling capacity an HVAC system provides. A properly sized system should match the home’s square footage, insulation, windows, layout, and other conditions. A unit that is too large may short-cycle and struggle with humidity, while an undersized unit may run continuously.
